Statement of the Managing Partners of CORE SE regarding the resumption of Holger Friedrich's mandate in the CORE group
With reference to the statement published on November 22nd, 2019 in the context of the media coverage in relation to the activities of our colleague Holger Friedrich as publisher of the "Berliner Zeitung", we are glad to announce that Holger Friedrich has fully resumed the mandate he has been entrusted with in the CORE group.
This is based on the report of an independent expert commission, tasked by the editorial offices of the "Berliner Zeitung" and the "Berliner Kurier" to examine and evaluate the files made fully available by Holger Friedrich. After examining the report, we are confident that Holger Friedrich is largely exonerated of the accusations made in the context of his involvement with the “Ministerium für Staatssicherheit”.
The files were examined by Marianne Birthler, former Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic (BStU), and the historian Dr. Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk. In their assessment, the two experts point out that Holger Friedrich was recruited against his will and under pressure to otherwise be held criminally liable by the GDR regime. In addition, they also state that he terminated his assignment at the earliest possible time. Deutschlandfunk Kultur summarizes: "Stasi report exonerates Holger Friedrich".
We deeply regret the way in which our colleague Holger Friedrich was portrayed in the run-up to the conclusion of the expert commission's report and will not tolerate any shortened account of events.
Holger Friedrich has resumed his leadership functions in both projects and in the Board of the CORE group. We are very much looking forward to the continued successful cooperation.
