REPORT

The Munich-based company Wirecard AG recently presented a mobile card-reading device that turns mobile terminal devices into points of sale, much as Square is doing in the US and iZettle in the Scandinavian countries. This attachable gadget enables small and medium-sized businesses in particular to accept customer payments without having to resort to more comprehensive and expensive cash register and terminal systems.

According to the company, the card reader supports both the reading of cards with EMV chips as well as of those with magnetic strips. The card reader is being launched within the framework of a white label program that simultaneously provides acceptance of debit and credit cards. Furthermore, Wirecard provides a wallet app for mobile terminal devices as well as an open interface, allowing developers to work with the program. The first “provider of cashier and processing systems for the gastronomical sector”, as the press release states, will begin rolling out a program in August of this year.

With this program, Wirecard is targeting retailers and providers who wish to offer their customers various types of mobile payment solutions. Customers can authorize their payments via signature on the touchscreen of the mobile terminal device or via their PIN.

Wirecard AG is a globally operating company that obtained a strong position in Asian markets after purchasing “Systems@Work” in December 2011. The payment transaction services offered by Wirecard encompass a broad client portfolio within the consumer and digital goods industries as well as within the travel and tourism sectors. In May 2012, Wirecard was able to win “Thomas Cook” as a client. Through its cooperation with “hybris”, a leading provider of e-commerce software, “hybris” customers are able to seamlessly able to access the Wirecard payment platform. Wirecard also processes payments of the myTaxi app, which recently expanded its offer to include this function.

Just recently, Wirecard announced that Deutsche Telekom has commissioned it to process its mobile payment transactions. These transactions include technical processes as well as the issuing of cards and payment processing. Wirecard will also take over the processing of payments for the Telekom Wallet, whose launch is planned for 2013. Presumably, Telekom will employ Wirecard’s white label program in one way or another for its wallet solution.
